At AHK, located in both Chicago and Naperville, Ill.,
children receive 24-hour medical and nursing support from
skilled pediatric nurses. AHK then educates families on
how to provide the best care for their children by training
them on how to confidently operate and maintain home
medical equipment, prepare medications and treatments,
and maximize government support systems.
What started as a concept developed by two mothers
living in the suburbs who had children with medical com-
plexities and no community support has emerged into
a first-of-its-kind transitional care model that continues
to grow—a third home is set to open in Peoria, Ill., this
September. The unique facilities hold a maximum of 12
beds (each child will have their own room in Peoria),
contain fully equipped kitchens, living room space for
families to congregate, and other amenities to feel like
home. Even special fabric and wallcoverings were selected
during the design phase to reflect a home and not a hospital.
“Children make faster developmental progress in a
home-like setting,” said Debbie Grisko, President and
Executive of Almost Home Kids. “Parent and caregiver
stress is reduced ... and the additional training improves
AHK envisions opening new facilities to continue
servicing the needs of children and their families in more
communities throughout the country. The new Peoria
site will be owned and operated by Children’s Hospital of
Illinois and is the third home of its kind in the nation. It will
be AHK’s first location designed from the ground up with
its program, children, and families in mind.

As McLean said, it takes a community and volunteers
to turn one of Almost Home Kids’ houses into a home.
From reading to holding babies to administrative
assistance or yard work at the Peoria location
(great for corporate groups), AHK offers a myriad
of ways in which supporters can make a difference.
And as with all non-profit organizations, there is
always a need for donations. To learn more about
